It seems Brazil but is just Art Basel.

Art copies Life. A non-authorized party at the cozy Favela Café inside the Art Basel Fair was forced to close by the police. This fact remember us the real riots that occurs inside the favelas in Brazil each week or month since ages…

The Favela Café project was signed by artist Tadashi Kawamata and architect Christophe Scheidegger. On a Friday night, Swiss police fired rubber bullets and teargas at an artist-activist group who took over Japanese artist kind of politically uncomfortable work at Art Basel, a fully working eatery in the guise of Brasil’s ad-hoc urban areas. Art Basel had allowed the group to protest for a limited time.

A brief reflection on this let us note that the political stress of the work is just a cute lecture of Favela’s aesthetic which delight the western art world without no shame. As an art piece for a glamorous event like this one, it critique is absolutely harmless. Meanwhile when was activated as a place for non allowed parties inside the commercial big show, the project finally gains meaning.

Gender, Art, Civil Rights: Brazil on a contraflow! / Gênero, Arte, Direitos Civis: Brasil na contramão!

Petra Varl: What happened with Zvezda and Odeon?, 2009.

A FAVOR DAS MANIFESTAÇÕES CONTRA A ELEIÇÃO E POSSE DO DEPUTADO E PASTOR MARCOS FELICIANO NA COMISSÃO DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS NO CONGRESSO, O ARTESQUEMA POSTARÁ IMAGENS DE TRABALHOS DE ARTE QUE AJUDEM A CONTESTAR AS IDÉIAS RACISTAS, HOMOFÓBICAS  E FUNDAMENTALISTAS DO PARLAMENTAR E SEU PARTIDO. O BRASIL ESTÁ NA MODA MUNDO AFORA, MAS PRECISAMOS DENUNCIAR O FANATISMO RELIGIOSO SE ENTRANHANDO NA VIDA CIVIL. FORA DEPUTADO FELICIANO, PELA DIVERSIDADE DE CREDO, DE RAÇA E SEXUAL.

Despite all you have been listening about the prodigy of Brazil, the country is living a moment when religious fanatism is getting power. Last week, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies elected an evangelical pastor as president of its Human Rights and Minorities Commission. He is Deputy Marco Feliciano, a fanatic spiritual lider, who has declared in the past two years that the misery in Africa was caused by Noe`s Damnation, and AIDS is a gay cancer… among other stupidities based on the Holy Bible.
So, artesquema will published images of gender art for the next days, in support for the impeachment of Mr Feliciano off his public situation. Bad education in Brazil is the cause of many freak mistakes in politics, like this one. Get out Mr. Feliciano! Artesquema will post some pics of gender art and colleagues just to shake Fanaticism a little bit.

The Brazillian experience – Puzzling Morality and the effusive body (part 1)

By Cristiane Bouger

When asked about her perspective on performance, the independent curator Daniela Labra stated with simultaneous confidence and perplexity: “Brazilians are performative. We deal with the body in a libertarian way, but we are also impregnated with moralisms.” The paradox raised by Labra can be identified in almost every aspect of Brazilian culture and social behavior. Nevertheless, her statement also addresses a poignant criticism to the conservatism of art institutions.

Labra has been working as a researcher and curator of performance works since 2004. In 2011 she conceived the Festival Performance Arte Brasil at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro–MAM RJ. The six-day festival received a grant from FUNARTE/MinC (The National Foundation for the Arts/Ministry of Culture) in the amount of approximately USD 125, 000. A curatorial team formed by professionals from different regions of the country composed the festival program, which presented the work of more than forty artists and art collectives.

TM Do you think that current art tries to make a star out of the creator?

SS Art is conceptual entertainment. Regardless of how radical it is, it has a great penetration on the market.

The Mela* Project

Raqs Media Collective, There Has Been a Change of Plan, 2006
